This is an admirable goal.

Very interesting.

Starting with empathy and community matters. But I couldn't help noticing the absence of the actual policy draft you mentioned writing.

Your essay focuses on the theater of process (indexes, consultations, frameworks) rather than the substantial bits of enforcement.

Meanwhile, the reality is that models are already running in people’s basements.

AI has already diffused beyond traditional governance rituals.

All the community surveys in the world can't change the fact that anyone with a GPU can run a model offline.

There's no easy way to get the genie back in the bottle at this point. That's the tension worth wrestling with.

Thank you so much for considered response.

Yeah I did toy with including some of the actual draft policy elements, but there were two reasons I didn't;

1) I wanted people to perhaps think through and share their own key policy elements without being too coloured by mine, as well as wanting more people to think they can get involved with lobbying and influencing! What do you see as priorities for national policy?

... and 2) Our own local process isn't at consultation stage yet, so I have longer to polish what I think should be the priorities ahead of being invited to then share them...

... interesting to hear your thoughts on the tension worth wrestling with, these topics fill my head most days so no doubt I will be revisiting in many different ways and look forward to reading yours and others thoughts too! 🥰

I’ve written extensively on these questions, far more than any comment box can hold.

If you're genuinely curious you can find my work here: https://www.thecorridors.org/

There are essays on AI safety as theater, AI feudalism, rented minds,the global scramble for sovereign intelligence etc. Feel free to wander through. If anything catches your eye I would be glad to talk further.
